Cole Canyon Farm: Offering Vegetables, Herb Seedlings and Small Plants for Your Garden Year Round
Working with our parents in the garden was a happy memory for us from our respective childhoods. Steve grew up in the urban Sunset District in San Francisco. I grew up on a small farm in Ohio. Our childhoods were different, as were our gardens; but the experience was memorable for both of us. When we purchased our five acres here in Aromas, we finally had ample space for year round gardening.
We started our garden in the spring with transplants purchased from stores and nurseries. As the summer proceeded, though, we found smaller selections to choose from. Fall and winter vegetables and herbs were simply not available. So we began starting our own. One or two packets of heirloom tomato seeds turned into 180 tomato plants which turned into a thousand tomato plants stored all over the place which finally turned into a greenhouse, a truck, a canopy, and a space at a farmers market or two.
We hope that our seedlings and herb plants help make your gardening experience efficient, rewarding, and inspiring. As we begin our fifth year, we wish you good gardening and thank you for your support.
PHOTOS OF OUR FARM
Germ Room : This Germination Room is where up to 12,000 seeds can start their life at one time. This room used to be a one-car garage
Nursery : Transplanting takes place here and elsewhere. This nursery used to be a dog run and goose coop. The geese still think they should get to sleep in here.
Chicken Coop : This lean-to provides housing for plants going to markets during the rainy season. It’s called ‘the coop’ because it’s next to a building which sleeps 250 chickens. It’s also a great spot for newly transplanted seedlings to adjust to cooler temperatures before they are planted out.
Cold Frame : The big house where hardened seedlings and young plants receive the most light, the coldest nights, and warmest days that nature provides in our neighborhood.
Corral : Plants rest here between markets. Do they want to be sold? Would they rather stay here?
We don’t know.
Deck : We overwinter some special herbs like rosemary and French Tarragon on our deck. No pampering.
